Welsh harlequins are considered to be a sustainable, heritage duck breed. They're a dual-purpose, light-weight breed known mostly for their calm demeanor, high egg production and their beautiful plumage. They weigh 4.5-5.5 pounds and lay 150-300 eggs per year. They are also great foragers. They are known to go broody and Welshie hens can easily hatch and raise their young without human interference. They just need a drake!
I have decided to sell my flock of ducks. There are three duck hens and a drake. Please reach out if interested!
Raising ducks is not for the faint of heart! They are not as easy to raise as chickens, but they are fun and they reward you with much larger and richer eggs. They start laying sooner, longer and all year long. Although a body of water is not required for ducks, I strongly believe that a pool or pond is non-negotiable for them. They love swimming all year long, even in the winter. If you don't have a pond, a livestock tank or even a baby pool can be turned into a pond for ducks. Be prepared to clean it out frequently though, because they are unnaturally filthy! They create so much wet, loose manure that almost immediately becomes a layer of muck atop everything. I call it "Moop". So if you get ducks... plan on being entertained, but also, plan on a mess!
Hatching eggs in an incubator can be tricky, depending on what incubator model you choose. Some models do most of the work for you, from turning them to keeping the humidity maintained. Buying ducklings is much easier for those who want to get started with ducks, but we do also have fertilized duck eggs available. Or, if you already have your own fertilized eggs, ask me about my hatching service!
Divine duck eggs from our delightful ducks, are $5 per half dozen. One duck egg equals 2-3 chicken eggs! Our duck eggs have the darkest orange yolks you've ever seen and are eggscellent for baking!

Since I started with more than one breed of ducks, I wasn't able to offer purebred ducklings. So I decided to sell my Silver Appleyard flock so that I can hatch out pure Welsh Harlequins going forward. I sure will miss them, but they went to two different homesteads and are now retired and living their best lives on large ponds! :)
Welsh harlequin males are $10 each, females are $15 each.
Be aware that there is currently a waiting list for ducklings. The next hatch date will be September 2nd, 2024, but unless something changes, they are already sold.
