Starting back in 2010, when my husband and I lived in Florida, I had raised many different breeds of chickens. My favorites were my Ameracuanas and Silver Laced Wyandottes. When we bought our home in North Carolina, I started looking into which breeds do well here. Since Ameracanas are such a smaller breed, they are less hardy for NC winters. So I started researching Wyandottes, and that is when I discovered that not only are they winter hardy but they also come in a variety of colors. What’s even better is that they generally lay through the winter months as well as summer, whereas other breeds tend to cease egg production.
Most commonly, Wyandottes are Silver Laced or Gold Laced, but when I saw they also come in Blue Red Laced, I knew that I just had to have them! I have Blue Red Laced roos and hens, along with some Gold Laced and Silver Laced ladies. This allows me to breed a wide variety of colors, while still keeping true to the Wyandotte breed.
The Wyandotte is an American breed of chicken developed in the 1870s. They are amongst one of the most beautiful breeds of chickens, a popular show bird with nine recognized color variants. They are a very docile breed, each one of them has a great disposition and are quite friendly to humans and other animals.
Wyandottes have a heavy body, which makes them a great dual-purpose choice. They lay lots of medium to large brown eggs, but some people like to raise them for meat. The breast is deep, full and well rounded, with yellow skin. Their bodies are considered medium length however they are very wide, carrying that width from back and into the tail. Roosters weigh between 8 and 9 pounds, and hens weigh between 6 and 7 pounds.
As I mentioned before, they are also winter hardy birds. They have a small rose comb, which makes them perfect for cold climates because they are not prone to frostbite. They are well equipped to handle our North Carolina winters, but should be protected from frostbite when temps dip below freezing.
My flock is NPIP certified: They are tested by the Department of Agriculture and are free from Avian Flu and Salmonella Pullorum.
The majority of my flock are Blue Red Laced, and I have several Gold Laced and Silver Laced ladies. Since I breed Laced Wyandottes exclusively, I am able to produce some truly stunning color varieties that you won't find anywhere else!
My birds are raised holistically without any hormones, shots or antibiotics. They are treated with kitchen scraps, fruits and vegetables and are free to roam our property, but most of them choose to stay inside the pasture with our sheep. They are given the lives I would think they would choose for themselves. I am proud to be able to offer such gorgeous, fat and healthy breed stock to you and your family!
WHY YOU NEED A LACED WYANDOTTE ROOSTER!
Sure, adding a rooster into your chicken flock is the only way to get fertilized eggs and baby chicks, but did you know that the presence of a large rooster can also prevent a large number of predator attacks?
Roosters naturally want to protect their ladies. In fact, they will fight to the death to protect them! My roosters are massive, (tipping the scale between eight and nine pounds!), and therefore they intimidate hawks. My flock is free-ranging, yet I never have an issue with hawks attacking them: They don't even try!
Not only do my roosters do a great job at protecting your flock, they actually have great temperaments! Folks are always surprised by not just their massive size, but how calm and friendly my roosters are. They have great personalities.
Also, they are beautiful! My roosters are highly sought after, not only for their size and their personalities, but also because they are truly stunning!
All of the different color variations : Blue Red Laced, Copper/Gold Laced and Silver Laced- each of them have beautiful plumage. Their chests all have the lovely "laced" pattern which is why they are called Laced Wyandottes. The pictures truly do not do them justice.
So are you looking for a solution to the hawk problem to your flock, or maybe looking to replace a mean or "bully" rooster? Maybe you just want a gorgeous rooster that is easy to handle and good with kids? You should consider a Laced Wyandotte rooster!
